An easy way to get gifts to look their best

You know those amazing 60-second videos of gift-wrapping ninja moves, demonstrated by a lady who is no doubt a gift store assistant by day and an origami queen by night? Well, after many failed attempts, I have come to accept that we were not all destined to fold to perfection. As an easy alternative, here is a rule of thumb for wrapping gifts.

Combine:

1. Something smooth
2. Something textured
3. Something unusual

1. Smooth:
- Wrapping paper (this one's obvious)
- Glossy ribbon
- Glossy name tags

2. Textured:
- Fabric for wrapping
- Pages of old books for wrapping
- Baker's twine
- Sackcloth ribbon
- Fabric ribbon
- Lace
- Chalkboard tag

3. Unusual:
- Buttons
- Doilies
- Flowers
- Tree/doorknob ornaments
- Fir cones
- Costume jewellery
- Pom poms
- Draw designs on your wrapping paper

Include those three elements and no-one will ever notice those corners you had to fold over four times. Last time I wrapped a present it involved simultaneous diving to grab the scissors out of my toddler’s hands and attempts to peel off the sticky tape he had used to tape his mouth shut. Gift-wrapping ninja moves in the making.
